CNN’s Studio 21L in the New York Hudson Yards facility is designed to be shot along two opposing axes, one intended for Anderson Cooper 360° and the other meant for round table discussion segments.
Formally the studio is defined by clean rectilinear elements, accented by intersecting circles at key positions. A restrained palette of crisp whites and brand reds stand out from receding dark planes and allow the tone of the space to shift completely with LED graphic content and lighting.
AC360 is given the main axis toward a wide LED video expanse. Its signature piece is a two-component desk that transforms to accommodate any number of guests or even a discussion panel. Arced LED video arrays can serve as foreground elements for opening shots, but their ultimate purpose is to track into a configuration that defines the second shot axis.
Oriented toward the opposite corner of the studio, the round table discussion area relies on low-res LED arrays beyond glass to suggest context, while the arced tracking displays feature specific content or remote guests.
As a whole, this relatively small space gains ultimate flexibility and achieves highly distinct looks through the careful implementation of reconfigurable elements.
