The Express Scripts brand lab in St. Louis is a project realized over three iterations. Lab 1.0, completed in 2010, is a working data set analysis lab for the company’s Advanced Research + Analytics Group. In 2014, Lab 2.0 brings a significant architectural expansion to the existing facility and creates work spaces for the Decision Design Group and Specialized Care Group.
The expansion most notably features a large atrium filled with flexible tools to facilitate the data scientists’ collaborative work. Elements such as tracking meeting booths, mobile touchscreen tables, and repositionable monitor walls dynamically define the space.
From a creative perspective, this project fully spans opportunities to design at various scales: from masterplan, to building-level features, to innovative details and branding moments — the resulting lab is cohesive, interactive, and engaging.
For Lab 3.0 in 2019, a visitor suite and two presentation and discussion areas are added. Workstations and branding across Lab 1.0 are refreshed, and two of the collaborative spaces of Lab 2.0 are reimagined with more interactive technologies for current use cases.
As a whole, the facility remains a flexible, functional lab, adapts well to the needs of its teams, and actively demonstrates valuable processes to visiting stakeholders.
